All cemetery properties and their inhabitants deserve dignity.

Please help us solve the following indignity.

Do not look away.

Situation

Children of Abraham Cemetery is a Jewish 1. Immigrant, 2. Orthodox, and 3. Veteran/War Veteran cemetery in Andover/Lawrence, Massachusetts (our 5 buried family members there represent all 3 cohorts). Children of Abraham Cemetery, Inc., governed by a board of directors (Board), is responsible for its maintenance and preservation. The cemetery property is long neglected. Its original three brick buildings/chapels that composed the cemetery facade deteriorated and went to the trash. Its original stone wall that composed the cemetery facade crumbled into the public street and went to the trash. Fences collapsed. Gravesites dislodged. Headstones toppled. Pathways destroyed. Overgrown trees fell. Recent property changes are reactive versus proactive.

Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts over many years rejected the cemetery property for acceptance to its portfolio and made available itself for specific recommendations to the Board to satisfy the requirements for acceptance.

Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. did a site visit that validated our concerns and many Veteran gravesites/War Veteran Section but confirmed that the cemetery property is not an official Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. cemetery.

Rabbinical Court of New England sent a formal invitation for mediation to which the Board did not show up.

Solution

We call on Children of Abraham Cemetery, Inc. and Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts to immediately establish and execute a written plan to transition the cemetery property to Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts, to ensure its perpetual safety, security, solvency, and stewardship. Tell your family, friends, and religious leaders.
